Muncie YWCA Pool Maintenance Fund

Photo by Kurt Hostetler / The Star PressThe YWCA pool is a warm water pool (84 to 88 degrees). Because it is 80 years old, (it was last rehabbed in 1992) there are constant repairs needed.

In December 2008 to bring the pool up to meet a new federal code we had to spend $5,000.

We had decided to close the pool; however our members and swimmers sfelt the pool had to be kept open due to the use of so many seniors who needed the warm water exercise.

They raised the initial $5,000 to have it fixed so it was kept open.

Due to ongoing expenses we know another $15,000 is needed to be able to keep it open past June 30, 2009.

"The YWCA pool, because of it's warm water, does cater to seniors and those with arthritis and joint pain. Many of our swimmers need this exercise just to keep mobile. The upkeep of an 80 year old pool is expensive. The pool was last updated in 1992 and meets all codes; however ongoing maintenance is an issue.

We really need an additional $15,000.00 over what is budgeted for 2009. When we were going to close the pool we received letters, visits, and calls asking us to please keep the pool open. Many users stated they would not be mobile and able to keep their independance without the use of the water exercise program.

We have raised the prices to help, but many people on fixed incomes need this program and can not pay much higher fees.

We would like to have a scholarship program to help these folks." – Sandy Markert
